If you’re new to Dubai or planning to make the move, you might be surprised to learn that you’ll need a Dubai alcohol license to purchase alcohol for personal consumption in your home. First things first: If you’re on a tourist visa, this doesn’t apply to you. You can simply show your passport at Dubai’s designated alcohol stores to make your boozy purchases.
Dubai residents who are 21+ with an Emirates ID are required by law to get a Dubai alcohol license. You do not need this to purchase alcoholic drinks at a restaurant, hotel, or bar, but you do need it to buy alcohol for your home.
Thankfully this process is not only much easier and faster than it used to be, but as of 2023, it’s absolutely free. All you have to do is visit one of Dubai’s alcohol stores – either MMI or African + Eastern – and register for your alcohol license.
While you used to have to wait weeks for a physical card, these days all you have to do is download the License DXB App, log in, and show your license barcode whenever you want to make a purchase. It’s also possible to make purchases right away!
